On-Grid vs Off-Grid vs Hybrid — Which Is Right for You?

Most first-time buyers assume “solar” is one product. It isn't — the three common configurations solve different problems, and picking the wrong one means paying for capability you don't need (or missing capability you do).

On-Grid: lowest cost, needs a stable grid

On-grid systems connect directly to the utility grid with no battery. They're the most cost-effective option and use net metering to offset your bill, but they shut down during a grid outage by design (for safety) — so they don't provide backup power.

Off-Grid: full independence, no grid credit

Off-grid systems run entirely on battery storage with no grid connection at all. They make sense where grid access is unreliable or unavailable — but you're sizing the system (and battery bank) to cover your full load yourself, which raises the cost.

Hybrid: grid savings plus backup

Hybrid systems combine a grid connection with battery backup — you get net metering savings during normal operation and automatic backup power during an outage. It's the most flexible option, at a cost between the other two.

If your grid supply is mostly reliable, on-grid usually gives the fastest payback. If outages are frequent or you run equipment that can't tolerate downtime, hybrid or off-grid is worth the extra cost. Talk to us about your outage frequency and we'll recommend a type before we talk sizing.
